More About Shepherd of the Hills

An Ozarks Story Told Under the Stars

Shepherd of the Hills is based on Harold Bell Wright's famous 1907 novel of the same name, a story about the Ozarks and the people who made their lives in these hills. The outdoor drama tells that story on a stage under the open sky, following Ozark families through the late 1800s. It has become one of America's longest-running outdoor dramas, and for many visitors a trip to Branson is not complete without an evening at this production. It is Branson at its most authentic.

This is not a theater show that happens to be outside. The Ozark Mountain setting is part of the production, and the evening light fading over the stage as the story unfolds is something no indoor venue can copy. The cast numbers more than 90 actors, and the story shares the stage with live animals, fire effects, and gunfights. Seasonal by nature, Shepherd of the Hills Branson performances run from May through October, which makes it a warm-weather tradition rather than a year-round option.

What You Will See on the Outdoor Stage

The scale is the first thing you notice. With a cast of over 90 actors, the stage fills with townspeople and families rather than a handful of leads, and the story of the Ozarks in the late 1800s plays out with the crowds and commotion of a real settlement. Live animals move through the scenes. Gunfights break the quiet, and fire effects light up the night as the drama builds. It is theatrical in the old sense, big, physical, and happening right in front of you.

Arrive before the show and the evening starts early. The Trail of Lights runs before the performance, and Inspiration Tower offers panoramic views across the Ozarks that are best enjoyed while there is still daylight. An optional chuck wagon dinner is available before the performance as well, so you can eat without leaving and then head to your seat. Give yourself a few hours on site rather than treating it as a two-hour show, and you will get the full experience.

Thurman Old Mill Theater and Planning Your Visit

The Thurman Old Mill Theater is at 5586 W 76 Country Blvd toward the west end of the Branson strip. The 2026 season runs May 5 through October 24, with performances on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. From May through August the show starts at 7:30 PM. In September and October it moves earlier, to 7:00 PM on Tuesday and Thursday and 6:00 PM on Saturday, as the days get shorter. The performance itself runs about two hours.

Dress for an evening outdoors. Summer nights in the Ozarks are warm, but September and October can turn cool once the sun goes down, so a jacket or blanket is a good idea late in the season. Arrive at least 30 minutes early, and earlier if you plan on the tower, the Trail of Lights, or the chuck wagon dinner. Shepherd of the Hills tickets are sold directly by the venue, not by Get Branson Tickets, but our team is happy to help you line up the other Branson shows on your trip. Call (417) 243-9629.
