The Sanders family is Burl and his Scripture-quoting wife Vera, the twins Dennis and Denise, their sister June (she doesn't sing, she signs), and Uncle Stanley, all presided over by Reverend Mervin Oglethorpe, who works part time at the pickle plant. Every one of them has a story, and the comedy comes from watching those stories collide in front of a congregation that is not supposed to see any of it.
Between the antics there are more than 30 classic gospel songs, played live by the cast on guitar, piano, accordion, mandolin, and washboard. Most people know the songs and end up singing along. Plan on about two hours with an intermission, and expect the final scene to send you out into the Branson sunshine with a lump in your throat.
Mornings at the Little Opry Theatre
Smoke on the Mountain plays at the Little Opry Theatre, 3562 Shepherd of the Hills Expy, Branson, MO 65616. The 2026 season runs Tuesday through Saturday at 10:00 AM from March 12 through October 10, with breaks August 9 to 19 and a few single dates listed on the calendar. From November 4 through December 16 it plays Wednesdays only, while Sanders Family Christmas takes the rest of the week.
A 10:00 AM show is a Branson planner's friend. You are out by noon, McFarlain's is in the same building for lunch, and the afternoon and evening are open for other shows and attractions. Parking in the IMAX lot is free, and arriving 20 to 30 minutes early is plenty for a 210-seat theater.
